The Best of St. Croix
African Dance Class 2009
Every year, St. Croix Sankofa leads a free African Dance and Drumming Class
presented at St. Gerard's Hall in Frederiksted on a Saturday afternoon. This year's
instructors are Kaisha, Omitula, Shangoyomi, Nana Adwoa and Mayimuna. The
drumming will be laid down by members of St.Croix Sankofa, Dembaya, Per Ankh
and Bamboula Haven. This year there are vendors of crafts and body products to
reinvigorate you after the workout. Other classes take place throughout the year.

The class began with a series of stretching exercises,
each one stretching a different body part. Even the little
ones got in on the stretches.
The drummers began to play and now the dancers
could move to the rythmic sounds.
The guidance of the young was always done with a gentle hand.
Head, neck and shoulders.
And then, the various movements are demonstrated to
be copied by the class.
The drummers listen to a new beat as a visitor, Abdul
from Senegal gives them the rythm before they join in.
As we continue, the dance steps get more complex.
More instruction on drumming the Senegalese beat.
Then we moved to the personal expression as each dancer got to
combine moves each in his or her own way before the drums.
And in the end, all dance together again.
The expression of joy is complete.
